Update for 30 March...
Today, it's back on the Spanish kick.
Paraiso Travel is a heavily cliched film on the experience of illegal immigrants trying to get into America. In Colombia, a couple of teenagers skip the country to head to America, only to get separated when they get to New York as the man is evading the police. Lost and broke, he is taken in by a Colombian couple who own a restaurant and he works at the restaurant as he moves from place to place looking for a place to live, all the while trying to look for his girlfriend. It's a rather frustrating film where you can predict pretty much everything that happens and it has it's fair share of completely oddball characters just for the hell of it. Anyway, Angelica Blandon plays a pretty good cock tease who seems to love rubbing things against her crotch... And anything with Ana de la Reguera is always more watchable (well except Así del Precipicio, which even with plenty of nudity from Ana is still a complete piece of shit film).
All Inclusive has an all star Mexican/Latin cast as a family goes to a tropical resort for the holidays and learn a few things about themselves. There's the parents who seem to be drifting apart, a daughter who is about to be married who meets a sexy dancer who she forms an attraction for, a frumpy daughter who doesn't want to be there and a son who is desperate to be with a girl and makes plans to meet one over the internet (a cameo from of all people Monica Cruz). Nothing really new here. People love, people learn or something.
After is a Spanish film about three long-time friends around 40 who get together for a dinner and a booze and drug fuelled night/morning. Told from the perspective of each friend, we have the father who is having trouble bonding with his son and feeling it for his wife, the corporate raider who has to decide to fire one of a sales team and is oh so lonely (similar to the plot of Up in the Air) and the woman who finds a dying dog on the road, which turns out to be the father's dog that escaped in the opening scenes and she desperately clings onto it as her boyfriend becomes evasive. I couldn't keep up with the narrative of the story, it all seemed out of the order when I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be in order and there's more than one 'uncomfortable' moment in the film for those who like that sort of thing (my favourite being the corporate raider pulling down a sleeping woman's dress to expose her breasts then masturbating to the site). And the corporate raider keeps taking out his cock for no reason...

Update for 28 March...
A couple of genre films that went straight to DVD/Bluray today.
The second Smokin' Aces film doesn't follow on from the first film, but is a whole new case about a low rung FBI officer who has been targetted for assassination, but why? He doesn't seem to be that big of a deal, but the best of the world's assassins magically end up at the FBI hideaway. Hmmm, something's up and like the original, there's gonna be a lot of bodies. While the formula from the first film is used here, this just seems like a low rent version of the first, which isn't bad, but doesn't have as strong back story (even if it was absolutely ludicrous). And the original had quite a decent cast, this one has a lot of 'you've seen them somewhere, but can't quite put your finger on it' actors. And I'll always watch something with Martha Higareda in it and looking smokin' hot like she does here helps as well (Autumn Reeser is nothing to sniff at either, strange she gets naked in an upcoming film, but haphazardly covers up here).
Surviving Evil is a Billy Zane film, you don't need to know anything else cos you know what to expect. Anyway for those who don't, he plays a wildlife adventurer who goes to an island off the Phillipines to live ruggedly for his TV show with his ragtag crew and some guy who's looking for gold left behind on the island by the Japanese during World War 2. Also, the natives are gathering and they are not a nice bunch and with one of the crew pregnant, the natives become more restless. Will they survive? Well, this film takes forever to get going and suffers for some pretty dodgy special effects, but it's not all awful and it's always good to see Natalie Mendoza kicking some arse, even if it is briefly. That reminds me, I gotta get the second Descent film.
Have a few Latin/Spanish films ready to roll, so they should be up in the next few days.

Update for 26 March...
Today's series has been sitting on the shelf for about a month as I was waiting for a HD source, that I eventually found. I've had the DVD since early January, but I wasn't completely happy with the source. Anyway...
Death in Love is... is monumentally pretentious. A man who just turned 40 turns off another woman after a depressive monologue. To stop himself from going into full breakdown mode, he throws himself into ths job, a model spotter/agent, but finds himself upstaged by the new upstart, who he then becomes friends with. In the meantime, he is having, well, something sexual, fucked if I know what it is exactly, some relationship with his boss/partner. Also his brother has massive body issue problems, his mother is a massive shrew (Jewish stereotype alert) or is she, his father becomes obsessed with her doings and seems very vacant (or off camera...) and then there's something about the Holocaust and a girl, who is most likely the mother becomes involved with the Nazi doctor who is about to fuck her and cut her up, like he has for numerous other women. I suppose there's something profound to be found here (apart from Morena Baccarin, who's extremely brief appearance is quite something, see below), but really, I, I got nothing...
I sure know how to pick 'em...
Anyway, plenty more to come over the next few days (no, really). One of my faves in Martha Higareda gets another run.

Update for 19 March...
Today, I focus on the film Finding Bliss.
Finding Bliss is a romantic comedy set in a porn studio. An up-and-coming film director (Leelee Sobieski) comes to LA and finds that every door closes in her face. She then gets a job offer at a studio, but finds out it's a porn studio and that she'll be cutting porn. This shocks her, but she reluctantly takes the job. Then, she decided to make the film she has been shopping around at the studio after hours. When she gets caught, she is reprimanded, but she has lost her cast and has to recast the film with the studios 'stars'. All the while, she gets closer to the porn director. It's a strange film, it feels dated as if it's never heard of the internet. While it's set in the world of porn, the film feels old fashioned with it's ideals and has limited nudity, like it was longing for the old days of porn. I dunno, it has it's moments and there's no way the film would've been made by a studio, but it just feels weird.
Head over the JMTV and you'll find some new collages and videos from the first 7 episodes of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, a show I was indifferent to begin with, but it's rabid B-gradeness has grown on me and I'm loving it. I'm surprised too...

Update for 10 March...
A quick update today, with Rachael Taylor, who seems to have appeared quite a lot on the site recently :)
Splinterheads is a comedy about a 20-something man stuck in a nothing job in a small town going nowhere who meets a girl who scams him out of money for petrol. He finds out that she's a splinterhead (not a carny), who has to work the crowd harder to make money (or something...) and she is also into geocaching, some sort of America-wide treasure hunt. Of course, he falls for her, but she has an abusive boyfriend that she can't shake. I didn't mind this film, it's definitely a slight film, but not a bad one with a few good laughs and generally endearing characters. Worth a look, but don't expect a world beater.

Australian classics for 9 March...
Last week I promised hardcore action and well... well, I apologise. How 'bout some nonsense with the occasional car chase?
Metal Skin was the follow up from the director of Romper Stomper and starring four of the biggest named young Australian actors of the time (Aden Young, Ben Mendelsohn, Tara Morice and Nadine Garner), so it should've been a slam dunk winner. Baahhhh, wrong. It failed miserably. Why? Because it's all arty style and not a lick of substance. A film featuring illegal drag racers with very little drag racing. A film that featuring 3 completely messed up characters and their even more messed up parent. There's so much psychoses here, some psychiatrists would be masturbating in delight. A completely rubbish film that could've saved itself in the final act, but decides to fellate itself with it's own bullshit.
On the Metal Skin DVD there's a hour long movie by Geoffrey Wright (the director of Metal Skin) called Lover Boy which was made in the mid 80s and has a bit of nudity in it, so I'll have a closer look in the coming days. Has some good actors in it too like Noah Taylor, Ben Mendelsohn and Alice Garner. Hope it's better than Metal Skin...
Today's redux features a couple of films featuring Emma Lung. She is a long time fave of mine, probably since The Cooks. These two films are fairly forgettable, but with both being played over summer (hell, I think Peaches was the summer before), I've decided to do some HD reduxes. She was also in a couple of other things that played over summer, the kid's show My Place, playing it pretty straight (well, it is a kid show...) and she is very briefly in Garage Days as some sort of babysitter/big sister very early in that film. Oh, and I just watched Triangle, she is very briefly in that film too (wow, that's a mindbender of film, but I liked it).
Always look forward to seeing Emma Lung in something.
The flashbacks continue today, featuring the 2000 miniseries The Potato Factory. Well, I finally got out of the 80s.
Mary is a maid who is also a whiz on the abacus. But, she runs into an everlasting series of hardships including a turn as a prostitute and a madam of sorts, which leads to her being imprisoned on Australia. And of course she has a one true love. Or something. I lost interest about half an hour in and rushed through the next 2 and a half hours because life's too short to give a shit about a Bryce Courtenay adaptation.
I think I'll head to the 90s next with a bit of hardcore action to rid myself of this nonsense. (What? Hardcore action in an Australian film? Never...)

Update for 1 March...
A couple of Australian films today.
Coffin Rock is a thriller about a couple who are trying to conceive a child, but they are struggling and it looks like it's the fault of the husband. While at the clinic, the receptionist, a young man spies the couple and decides to follow them back to their home town, a fishing town. He gets a job at the fishery, then he befriends the wife. After a drunken night cursing her husband, she has sex with the young man, but immediately regrets it, except she falls pregnant. And the young man now wants in and he will do anything to be with his girl and child. Takes a while to get going, but not a bad little thriller.
Razzle Dazzle is a mockumentary that focuses on a dance club that wants to win the annual dance contest. The film follows the teacher and the students and their mothers/fathers. Didn't really think about the film at first because I'd rather watch something, well, harder, but this film is surprisingly funny and has some good performances, even if the film is utterly predictable and the characters straight out of the book of stereotypes.
