The horror, the horror...

I'm going to put a wild and crazy theory forward.

Emmanuelle Béart chooses her roles by how completely bonkers her character goes.

Cos no one, and I mean no one, does crazy like Emmanuelle or as often.

Yep, it takes 5 minutes for Emmanuelle to go completely bonkers and for the rest of the film she gets progressively worse :D

Vinyan has been marketed as a horror film. But, this ain't no traditional horror film. It's even pushing it to call the film a psychological horror film, more a psychological drama. But, it'll be horror for now. Vinyan begins with Emmanuelle's character remarkably seeing her son on a charity video, her son that had been swept away by the big tsunami a few years back. Desperate to get her son, she looks for a local (Thai) kingpin to help her get to Burma, a country that isn't letting anyone in. It's clear the kingpin is taking them for a ride, ripping them off, but Emmanuelle doesn't want to believe anything else. All the while her timid husband tries desperately to get her out of this madness.

Nothing much happens in Vinyan at all, in fact there's barely any dialogue. But like the director's previous film, The Ordeal (another trippy horror film), I was mesmerised by what was going on. This is a strange, strange film, but it's also intriguing if you are patient and not expecting a horror film (go to the IMDB page for this film for a number of garbage 'Worst Film Ever' threads).

If you're looking for something very different, I highly recommend this film. If you want a tradtional horror film, you should probably bugger off...

For today's update, the British/New Zealand co-production of The Ferryman. Two couples travel with the owners to Fiji by yacht. On the way, they pick up a stowaway, who is acting strangely and then stabs one of the travellers. The stowaway gets thrown off board while the victim recovers dramatically, but things aren't the same. The victim becomes violent, including to his girlfriend during sex. He then stabs another traveller and the second victim begins to act like the first victim. It seems that this special knife used for the stabbings helps someone called the Ferryman (hey that's the title!) pass from body to body. And the pleasant yacht journey turns into a bloodbath (they only way to have a bath, damnit). Didn't mind the film, it was fairly good. Plenty of overacting though, particularly Sally Stockwell, man she turn it up to 12 or even 13.

Today, the British horror film The Devil's Chair gets a run. A mental patient is released from detention and is asked by a university professor to excort himself and some of his student back to the abandoned psych hospital where all the bad shit first happened and back to the titular chair. It seems the chair make you disappear off the face of the Earth in a bloody mess, but to where, we are about to find out. A stock standard 'abandoned place' horror film to begin with and then it turns in a messy, but stranglely satisfying ending. I won't give it away, but the film does a bizarre 90 degree turn down a couple of unexpected turns.

Actually, one of the videos kinda gives the main twist away. Guess which one...

Today, it's the slasher horror film, Kill Theory. Basically, 8 friends go to a country house to party, but a killer murders one of the group (the one who shows her tits, natch) and then leaves a message saying that they should kill each other leaving a last man standing or he'll kill all them. I think it involves some rubbish about everyone can kill if they have to and it all gets a bit muddied as people seems to come back from being dead, so, there's nothing new and the ending is inevitable.

And to think I once said Agnes Bruckner would be one of the 'next big things'. How wrong was I? What a shame...

OK, over the next week I'll be focusing on horror films and the gold that they provide in regards to pretty women.

First up is the low budget American film, The Last Resort, which continues the positive promotion for tourism in Mexico. Basically, a group of girls go down to Mexico to have a hen's party. One of the girls meets a boy and goes off for relations, while the other four girls go on a so-called tour of local sights offered by some shady characters, only to be brought to the middle of nowhere and robbed, while one girl is shot. They go to an abandoned resort for help. The girl, her lover and his Spanish speaking friend go to find them, but are stopped at every turn at the mention of the resort. When they finally get to the resort, they see that the girls have all gone crazy from indulging in the things that they had suppressed. The film has a very good idea, but like Fingerprints before it, suffers from terrible acting and low budget restrictions. But, at barely 70 minutes, it is an intriguing, but sadly not wholly satisfying film. And remind me to never go to Mexico, gee, how many tourist based horror films is that now...

Also, the film is being promoted here with the chick from Friday the 13th remake, America Olivo, you know the one with the incredibly fake tits. She is the star of the film and very briefly shows her breasts. Was surprised Sita Young got naked though.

The Spanish update continues unabated...

A quick addition to the Spanish update today.

Sexykiller etc. is an odd little curio and a perfectly fun film. Barbara (Macarena Gomez) is a student at a medical school and a homicidal maniac. She tells her story as she is strangling a man who just killed her dog. 8 people are dead (and rising) and police are baffled; they can't believe that a pampered, sexy princess could be a cold-blooded killer. And she will stop at nothing to get the man of her dreams and her position in society... Played mercifully for laughs at camp value (a favourite moment is a lounge version of Aqua's epic, Barbie Girl), the film is a lot of fun, even when the film runs out of ideas and turns the third act into a zombie film. Macarena is perfectly cast and vamps it up extremely well. Hopefully, it'll become a cult classic like El Día de la Bestia (The Day of the Beast).

I'm not sure if I'll have more Spanish stuff. It'll depend on how much time I have.

A couple more today.

The Anarchist's Wife is a very good film about a woman (Maria Valverde) who falls for a man who is a freedom fighter in various causes throughout Europe. His lengthy disappearances begin to take a toll on her and her children and her oldest daughter must take up the slack and look after the family in her sickness. But, the woman never gives up hope that she will be back with her husband. This is a very European epic and is fairly successful at telling an epic love story. And Maria is one of my favourites, so any film with her is very welcome.

DarkBlackAlmostBlue is about a 20-something man who is stuck being a cleaner and desperately wants to a have a better job. Meanwhile, his brother is in jail and during an acting class with female prisoners, he falls in love with one of the female prisoners, who desperately wants to get pregnant. The brother gets out of prison and finds out he's sterile, so he asks his brother to visit the woman in prison and help get her pregnant. Over time, the young man falls in love with the woman as he drifts away from his own girlfriend, who is a girl who has come back into his life. And there's plenty more to talk about. An excellent drama with some very good performances.

Well, the Spanish series continues on unabated.

Summer Rain, directed by Antonio Banderas, is a coming of age story set in a summer break during the 70s that focuses on a group of friends and how their lives change. Focusing mainly on a wannabe poet and the girl he likes, a wannabe dancer and how their blossoming love crumbles. This film is OK, but coming of age stories are not really my thing.

Obaba is about a filmmaker (the very pretty Bárbara Lennie) who travels to Obaba to make a film about the region and finds some incredibly interesting stories from the locals, unravels a local mystery and also discovering a fair bit about herself.

Alright, the Spanish update continues with a rather large update, all from the one film. Actually, it was pretty easy to cap, as most of the sex/nude scenes were fairly static, but lengthy.

Anyway, Mentiras y Gordas (aka Sex, Party and Lies) follows a microcosm of Spanish youth as their lives revolve around sex, parties and lies... There's barely any plot except for various people hooking up or not hooking up or being set up whether it be straight or gay. Then they take drugs, lots of drugs, all sorts of drugs including one helluva lot of cocaine (including once off a girl going to the toilet!). Eventually, someone dies of a drug overdose, which is pretty inevitable, but can you guess who??? I'd like to say there's something profound to be seen here, but there's nothing here that says these people's lives are going to get better past the next fuck. Apparently the film has been fairly big in Spain and the film is aimed squarely at teenagers. There's no doubt this film would get a NC-17 rating in America as most of the sex (and there's plenty) is far more than you'll see in an American film.

But, is the film any good? No, not at all...

On the other hand, Ana Celia de Armas is so incredibly hot that I can't remember much else from the film. Oh, there's 5 other women naked (and a few men too), but... What was I talking about again? :)

Well, here comes the Spanish updates again. There's plenty of stuff to be released over the next week, so if you don't like the Spanish updates, see you in a week ;)

But, you'll be missing out on some pretty girls. And a shitload of nudity...

El Juego del Ahorcado is an interesting drama about a bright young girl (the very beautiful Clara Lago) who is abducted and raped, but she manages to stab her assailant to death and get away. She tells David, her lifelong friend this and he decides to dispose of the body, but something happens and it changes everything. It also turns out that two girls are missing in a similar matter to her. The friends become lovers and their relationship changes dramatically over time. This is a good story, but is a bit uneven at times. Clara is very good and drives the film expertly considering she is only 19. We'll definitely be seeing more from her in the future.

Amor Idiota (Idiot Love), well, the title has a word in it to describe the film perfectly (a hint: It's not love). No, I tell a lie. This film is horrendous. Early in the film the main character attempts to stab his penis with a fork while drunk and it simply doesn't recover from there. Most of the second act is sex scenes, which at least enlivens things for a little while, but anything else is unwatchable. Bah!
