Update for 26 November

First up this week, the excellent Hard Candy, hell, I'll go as far as to say it's one of the films of the year. A brilliant psychological thriller about a 14 year-old girl who exacts revenge on a man who may or may not be a paedophile, or even the man she is looking for. The two leads are excellent, especially the featured Ellen Page, who positively sizzles. But, it ain't a pretty film and isn't for everyone.

And before you ask, Ellen Page was seventeen during filming (I double checked this), so you can download without too much apprehension :)

Continuing on the unsettling path, next up is Edmond, a David Mamet written film about a man who decides to leaving his boring marriage and go out and find himself. He does so, but his actions will dictate his future. I dunno about this film. The longer the film goes, the less realistic it becomes after a spot-on, almost humourous first half. William H. Macy is excellent, but I just kept thinking 'This is bullshit' after I watched it.

Some very pretty ladies frequent the film in very small roles, including Julia Stiles giving a tease (I still don't understand why the nipple is considered the 'final frontier' of breast nudity, but it's alright to show the side of a breast. American actresses...), Bai Ling in an interesting soft-core peep show scene and Mena Suvari as a whore. Even Denise Richards appears as a stripper (although you only get close-ups in her scene).

I really know how to find obscure films, an Zyzzyx Road has hardly been seen anywhere. It features Katherine Heigl pre-Grey's Anatomy, possibly where her acting career was 'in transition'. This film looks cheap and suffers from the same old problems of most low budget independent films. It's plot is a bit unbelievable and a bit all over the place, but it's not terrible, but it's hard to recommend.

Finally, I don't think we see enough of Gina Philips on the screen, and I think she's pretty much stuck in straight to DVD hell, but Fear Itself isn't a bad film and she has a few sizzling hot scenes in the film, which is always welcome. Then, Jenny Mollen turns up and just looks hot. And then there's Tom Sizemore who in this film (and in Zyzzyx Road) as a knife wielding maniac, disturbingly so considering his recent indiscretions.

Update for 19 November

Again I haven't had much time to do caps, but I've set up a few series, so you might get a rare midweek update in the coming days. But knowing myself as well as I do, I wouldn't count on it...

Anyway, just 1 series today, from the film Where The Truth Lies. The film is a pretty good look at how a comedy duo fell apart after a girl is found dead in a hotel room they were staying in. There's a fair bit of Rashomon action going on with a number of points of view canvassed, not always truthful and a central character, a writer (Alison Lohman) writing a book about the incident, who has a lot more invested with the duo. While this is not Atom Egoyan's best work (The Adjuster, Family Viewing, Exotica and The Sweet Hereafter are better films), it's still very good and probably his most commercial.

And Alison Lohman and Rachel Blanchard get naked on film for the first time. Hey, I'm just saying. And I like the two of them quite a bit. By the way, the bit with Rachel in the bath is a dummy, as it was shown in the 'making of' documentary, but hey, I needed another panel...

Update for 12 November

Didn't have much time to do some capping this week, but I quickly rushed out this series. John Tucker Must Die is really only watchable if you are a teenage girl, but I suggest that they will find this film a little too childish. Sure, there's plenty of PG-13 style sexuality, but no man will watch this film without squirming quite a lot (I know I rolled my eyes a lot). This film is nothing you haven't seen before, and I've saved you all the trouble with 4 pretty hot chicks getting around in various garb.

No philosophical discussions today...

Update for 7 November

Well, I didn't have an update last week as I decided to work my way through about 15 DVDs that were piling up on my hard drive and were just waiting to be capped. Some had been there since the start of the year, so I needed a clean up. That's my excuse anyway.

So, this update is pretty damn big to make up for it. I've gotta laugh though, only 2 of the 9 movies featured here were from the DVDs I recently capped.

Factorum is not a film for everyone, it's very minimalist, but I actually found it to be pretty good. Matt Dillon is excellent in the lead as he goes through life in numerous jobs, taking on many women and generally drinking enough to get through life. That's pretty much the film. I dunno about Memoirs of a Geisha, I wasn't that impressed by it, there seemed to be a great amount of desperation in the film, especially coming from Zhang's character, and that isn't that appealing. I like Zhang, a lot, but the film is pretty forgettable. Another instantly forgettable film is Failure to Launch, in fact it's downright boring and only when Zooey Deschanel appears on the screen the film lightens up, but she does that in a lot of films.

And just quickly, Get Rich or Die Tryin' is a pretty poor derivative of 8 Mile, 50 Cent is no Eminem. The Caterpillar Wish is an interesting coming of age film, but there are better Australian films this year and it has kind of got lost in their wake. And then there's I'll Always Know What You did Last Summer. I know I've said that I'm liking these rubbish B film sequels to semi-popular films, but this film stretches this. It's premise is even flimsier than the original and the killer is so predictable, I was hoping that something would just happen for the sake of happening. I think I've bitten off more than I can chew. Bring on the Dukes of Hazzard prequel... (shit, I must be delirious, that film was atrocious)

Saw Suburban Mayhem on the weekend, and after starting off very well, it sadly never improves from there, mainly because you know what's going to happen. But, Emily Barclay's performance is like one helluva whirlwind. She dominates the film, probably to it's detriment (as everyone is pretty much put in the back seat after that), but she is definitely a star in the making. And she'll win the local awards by that far.

And in regards to Tripping Over, yes, I have been capping it, in HD, but I'm waiting to have a few more caps to complete to make a bigger collection. I've gotta do a couple of Neighbours episodes I promised as well. I'll do it one of these days...
