Update for 26 April...

Only a couple of films today, but, there's is quite a but from both films.

The Uninvited is a remake of the Korean horror film, A Tale of Two Sisters and if you've seen that film before this film, like me you may find The Uninvited frustrating as hell, even though I'm not a big fan of the original. Basically, the two films have the same structure, but veer off into different directions in regards to how it all happens. And The Uninvited is as subtle as a sledgehammer about it. It's diversions from the original plot are flat out ludicrous (particularly the murdered children bit). And well, neither of the two films are scary and the original is far more convoluted and I found just as unsatisfying. What I will say is that Emily Browning acquits herself well in the lead and her doll like looks suit perfectly for the role. Elizabeth Banks as the 'wicked' stepmother is also very good, pretty much playing against type. But as I said, both films frustrate the hell outta me. By the way, the original airs on Australian TV on SBS at midnight Wednesday night, Thursday morning if you're interested.

The second Into The Blue isn't as bad as it sounds, but hey, the original is no great shakes either. Basically, it's the same plot, struggling dive couple get a chance at vast riches, stumble on a criminal plot and have to save themselves and the day. Alright, there's a bit more to it, but not much. This film throws in a few pointless cameos, particularly Audrina Patridge, who should stick to 'reality' (I'm trying to be polite there. At least she looks good in a bikini...). You know what to expect, hard bodies in next to no clothes (or as little as possible), some slick action and that happy ending where the good guys get rich. At least it's better than the execrable Fool's Gold.

Update for 17 April...

Most of the stuff in this update has come from the bottom of the pile, which I've pretty much cleared. Time to move onto the new stuff.

Dying Breed is an Australian horror film, something that doesn't happen often lately (anyone remember Cut?). Basically, it's about an Irish woman (Mirrah Foulkes now of All Saints) who with her boyfriend, his friend and his friend's girlfriend (Melanie Vallejo) go to Tasmania to find the supposedly extinct Tasmanian Devil. But what they find is much more horrifying. Ah, just one more reason to kick Tasmania. It's an OK film, but it clearly made with a limited budget, so it has it's limitations. But there are plenty of worse horror films around and I like Melanie, so yeah. Oh and when I saw this in the cinema, I was the only one there. Viva Australia film!

Taking about worse horror films, how 'bout Asylum. This terrible film is about a group of social misfits who all live together at a university dorm that used to be a mental asylum where highly illegal experiments were performed on the patients. The head doctor was killed by the patients and now he's back and he wants the new inhabitants. And that's all I want to remember...

Bitten is a B horror comedy starring Jason Mewes (of Jay and Silent Bob fame) playing a distant and more respectable cousin to Jay who finds an incredibly hot chick bugging out outside his door. Turns out she's a vampire and they fall in love and that's where the fun begins. The film is a lot better than it's origins. It's pretty funny, has an unexplained Mexican theme and well woth a look, which is a change for a B film.

Broken Windows is a chick drama, I mean a massive chick drama. It follows 5 women over a couple of days who are at some sort of crossroad in their lives. Did I say it's a chick flick... Aw man it's a chick flick. A chick flick. Aw fuck it...

Boot Camp is an OK film about a girl (Mila Kunis) who is legally 'kidnapped' and taken to a boot camp at the request of her parents. Her boyfriend decides he wants her out, so he get's himself 'kidnapped' and tries to save her. Turns out the boot camp is brutal and rife with corruption and cover-ups. I think the film has something to say about parents being lazy in their duties and stuff, but the message is incredibly simplistic. Also, Mila Kunis does a nude scene, which is blurred out. Fantastic...

And finally, El A�o de la Garrapata, which I did so long ago I can't remember. Whatever...

Update for 6 April...

Did a lot of capping during the week, so I haven't got much to release this week, but what that means is there will be more in the coming weeks.

I was a bit reticent going into The Reader as it sounds like the type of film I'd usually avoid. But, I was surprised, it's really good. The Reader is about a young German boy, Michael, who meets Hanna (Kate Winslet), who helps him out after he was ill on the tram. He goes to thank her, but accidentally spies her naked and at first he is embarrassed and runs away, but he then becomes entranced by her and they begin an affair over one summer. Then she leaves without a word. Years later he sees he again, this time on trial for war crimes as she was a guard at one of the death camps. And the relationship starts again, but this time in a most unorthodox way. I could go on and on, but I would spoil it. Kate Winslet drives this film and she deserved her Oscar (and I don't usually say things like that).
